Stride To the Summit of the Spectacular Opal Ridge

Deep in Kananaskis country, a magnificent wonder awaits discovery: the spectacular Opal Ridge. Marvel at the rocky sentinels crowned in snow and gilded by the sun as you stride to the summit of Opal Ridge. Beware, the trek will not be easy, but it will certainly be an adventure to colossal heights and picturesque sights.

Now, your first steps will lead you up a slight incline, giving you a taste of what is to come… and a taste of how your calves will feel later on. Follow the trail and leap over the babbling creek before entering the forest. From there, the only way is up, for this will be the day you rise to new heights.

The trail is rather mysterious, branching off here and there as you depart the forest and ascend the steep and rocky slopes. There is no official signage as this is not an official trail (as are many in Kananaskis country), but fear not, this will only add to the adventure. Thankfully, your legs do not need to do all the work as some scrambling awaits you up and over the rocky cliffs to the ridge.

Be sure to look back (unless you are terrified of heights) so as to not miss the spectacular views of the valley below with what now seem like toy cars racing along the highway. Take solace in how far and high you have come, for there is still quite a ways to go.

The trail becomes clearer along the ridge and here, you may even encounter patches of snow in the late spring and early summer. Watch your step, for the snow may be slippery at times and it would be a shame to begin the descent before reaching the top.

At last, the final ascent has come. Though your limbs may be like jelly, the summit is within reach. Onwards you must go, for you will most certainly be rewarded by the wonders atop Opal Ridge. In fact, the satisfaction of reaching the summit will be far greater than the pain.

With each step you draw nearer and before you know it, you will have conquered the summit. Rejoice in the moment as you are treated to iconic views of the Canadian Rockies from Mount Kidd to Mount Potts to Mount Evan-Thomas. To the right lies the beautiful Kananaskis Lakes, embellishing the scene like gems, and you may even spot goats or sheep grazing along the mountainside.

When you are ready, you will return the way you came. Thankfully, the descent is less taxing, and much fun awaits as you skip and slide down those steep slopes you so laboriously trudged up. As you descend the scree, it would be wise to dig your heels in and lean forwards slightly, all the while trusting the rocks to slow you down. Poles would be quite helpful here, but if you lack poles, crab-walking may do as well.

Plan Your Visit

Google Maps
Distance: 8 km
Elevation: 1032 m
Duration: 4-5 h

Note: Distances, elevations, and durations are approximate.

Beware, Opal Ridge is a rather challenging hike and is certainly not one for the inexperienced or faint-hearted. Hiking poles will certainly help you balance and relieve the pressure on your knees, though it can be done without these as well. Be sure to dress in layers and wear proper hiking boots for the greatest chance of success. As this is a rather taxing trek, stay hydrated and bring lots of snacks to replenish your energy stores. The more you eat, the lighter your pack will be. Lastly, during the summer months, sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses will be helpful to prevent you from becoming crispy, as the sun can be all the more scorching on the mountaintop.

Final Remarks

Summit the spectacular Opal Ridge this summer! Though side effects of the hike may include jelly legs, the satisfaction of reaching the top and basking in the surrounding wonders are certainly worth the effort. As you venture out yourself, be mindful of the principles of Leave No Trace. Plan ahead, be considerate of others, and watch where you step lest you stumble rather than skip. Should you reach the top, be sure to set aside the camera for a few moments to savor the moment without distraction.

Here was a sneak peek at Opal Ridge. Keep an eye out for more swooping out of the sky.

I hope you enjoy, and I look forward to sharing more unofficial wonders with you. Happy hiking!

Thank you for journeying with me.
