Feeling blue? Then, Moraine Lake may be calling your name. An iconic gem of Banff National Park, Moraine Lake captures the hearts of all who behold her stunning glory. Her peaceful waters are of a lustrous blue, whose hue reflects the mood of the day.
Now, the best way to experience the marvels of Moraine Lake is by foot, unless you find someone willing to carry you. For those of us who are not so lucky, fear not, we can always take a hike. In fact, today you shall discover three beautiful hikes by Moraine Lake. Each can be completed in a day…as long you do not lose your way or your footing, which I sincerely hope does not happen.
Before you read on to uncover these wonders, I must warn you that personal vehicles are largely forbidden from accessing the road to the lake. Therefore, it is wise to reserve your shuttle in advance unless you prefer to begin your hike at the foot of Moraine Lake Road.
Note: Distances, elevations, and durations are approximate and are referenced from Parks Canada.
1. Consolation Lakes
- Distance: 2.9 km
- Elevation: 65 m
- Duration: 2 h
Now, of the three hikes, Consolation Lakes is by far the least strenuous. Begin at the Moraine Lake parking lot where you are forbidden to park and seek the Rockpile Trail. From there, a most prominent sign shall point you on your merry way.
Watch your step, for you shall pass along a field of boulders. Some may be quite slick depending on the day. From there, a lush pine forest awaits. Inhale deeply and immerse yourself in the sounds and scents of the forest as you skip along. The path becomes a boardwalk at times leading you over the marshy terrain. As the path is well-marked, there are few opportunities to become lost.
Eventually, you shall emerge from the forest and find yourself on the shores of Consolation Lakes. However, for those who are nimble of foot, this need not be the end of the journey. Along the shores is many a slumbering boulder where you may choose your own adventure. Watch your step lest you tumble into the lake! At last, when the boulders become scarce, find one to rest upon as you bask in the tranquil beauty of Consolation Lakes and the surrounding Rockies. When you are ready, you shall return the way you came.
2. Larch Valley
- Distance: 4.3 km
- Elevation: 535 m
- Duration: 3.5-4 h
True to its name, Larch Valley is famous for its beautiful conifers, which become a radiant gold in the fall. In fact, the larches are the only species of conifers to change color in Canada. Now, the trail to Larch Valley lies near Moraine Lake Lodge. One path borders the lake while the other rises into the forest. Choose the trail that rises, and you shall be treated to many a switchback snaking up the mountain. Watch out below, for depending on the day, you may spot the sparkling turquoise waters of Moraine Lake.
Eventually, a bench will mark a fork in the path where you may enjoy welcome repose. You may even spot a Canada Jay or two flitting about. When you are ready, follow the path on the right. Thankfully, the terrain here is not quite as steep as the switchbacks. Before long, you shall emerge from the forest and find yourself in the enchanting Larch Valley. Depending on the time of year, the larches may be of a verdant or gold hue. These gold larches define larch season, which typically falls from mid-September to early October, after which the delicate golden needles scatter like confetti.
Bordering Larch Valley is the Valley of Ten Peaks. These stalwart sentinels tower overhead, their silhouettes undulating along the horizon.
3. Sentinel Pass
- Distance: 5.8 km
- Elevation: 725 m
- Duration: 4.5-5.5 h
If you do not return from Larch Valley but trek onwards, you shall eventually find yourself before Minnestimma Lakes. Mirroring the surrounding peaks, these beautiful lakes offer a moment of solace before the final trek. Though Sentinel Pass is within sight, the trek will not be easy. Therefore, rest your limbs by Minnestimma Lakes if needed.
However, this is no time for naps, for we must head onwards. You shall ascend many a switchback before you reach the summit. Your limbs may weep, but remember, the beauty of Sentinel Pass and the satisfaction of attaining the top will leave your already breathless self more breathless. When at last you summit Sentinel Pass, it will seem as though you enter a portal to another world, the world of Paradise Valley in all its rugged grandeur. All around, the resplendent beauty of the Canadian Rockies shall encompass you from the dramatic Mount Temple to the Valley of the Ten Peaks rippling along the horizon.
Finally, if the spectacular vistas do not blow you away, the fearsome winds may. Hold on to your caps, for the winds may swoop in unexpectedly. If you do not become airborne, you shall return to Moraine Lake the way you came.
